My Three Sources

I choose three sources for my podcast.

Essay: “Looking into the Magic Minor: Disney’s Impact on the Fairy Tale Genre”

This is an essay wrote by Lynda Haas and Shaina Trapedo. And this source can view on the Internet.

The essay mainly discuss a development of Disney films from past to recent work. Moreover, the essay shares that the Disney made a change on gender idea performed in the films. About the essay’s structure, it first has an introduction about Disney Fairy Tales films and how those films represent the norm of gender roles. Then the essay make a summary of previous Disney Fairy Tales. Next, there is a big evolution on the gender idea reflected in later films.

I plan to quote some information from this essay to my podcast. For example, Lynda Haas and Shaina Traped states that Frozen is unlike Snow White, because Frozen revamps the princess archetype by depicting the anxiety and self-doubt implicit in meeting social standards and holding positions of authority. The point obviously reveals a norm of female role in recent Disney film, Frozen. I would use it for demonstrate recent gender idea reflected by Disney and connect it to my life experiences.

Podcast: “Disney Character Backstories We Need to Know”

This is a podcast that shows on the Google Podcast. This is one of a series podcast named Disney Assemble.

This podcast mainly discuss backstories of Disney Characters. Two speakers discuss three subtopic for the backstories. First, Disney character backstories affected by the society environment in one time. Second, the norm of gender roles can influence a formation of the character. Third, there is a prevalence of evil characteristics appears in Disney performed by male character. In conclusion, the speaker concludes what they are discussed before.

I decided to use this source for analyzing recent male role in Disney films. The speaker said that Disney creates more evil-like male roles in recent films. I believe that it is a reflection of norm of male role. The evil-like characteristics depicts a negative masculinity, which can affect audience’s idea about the norm of male.

Film: “Maleficent”

Maleficent is a 2014 American dark fantasy adventure film directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by LInda Woolverton.

This film mainly depict a new version of sleeping beauty. Maleficent is no longer a totally bad person. However, Maleficent is an innocent girl who hurt by the king, because the king betray their true love for inherit. Maleficent is a strength, powerful but kindness female character. This film is about a true love between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty.

I want to use Maleficent character as a strong quotation in my podcast. She is definitely a representative norm of female role in recent Disney film. And I quote the king’s action at this moment (01:17:04).

The king loses his kindness and acted more like an evil. He is a representative norm of toxic masculinity. This film shares a negative norm of male role. I decided to connect this moment to my experiences of gender role in real life.

Overall, all three sources will be appropriately cited in our podcast.
